Buying your first car

The dealer will not release the car without proof of insurance, and the policy you choose in the finance office is rarely the one you should keep.

Whatchanges
What changes
  • Michigan requires no-fault coverage: personal injury protection, property protection, and residual liability.
  • A financed car requires comprehensive and collision.
  • Your rate depends on the household, not just you — who else lives at the address matters.
What to do, in order
  1. Get a quote on the VIN before you sign; some models cost far more to insure than their price suggests.
  2. Choose your PIP medical level deliberately; unlimited is still available and still recommended for most people.
  3. Carry liability above the state minimum — 250/500 is our standard — and match uninsured motorist to it.
  4. Ask about gap coverage if you financed most of the price.
  5. Bind the policy the morning of pickup and bring the ID card.
