Insurance in Michigan

Michigan is where the Collective started and where its advisor team quotes and services coverage today. It is also the most unusual auto insurance state in the country.

Facts that change the answer
  • Michigan is a no-fault state. Your own policy pays your medical bills after a crash through personal injury protection (PIP); since 2020 you choose the PIP medical level, and unlimited is still available.
  • Property protection insurance (PPI) of $1 million is required and pays for damage you cause to parked cars and property; damage to a moving car you hit is limited to the $3,000 mini-tort.
  • The state minimum liability limits are $50,000 per person / $100,000 per accident. The Collective’s advisors quote 250/500 by default.
  • Deer strikes are comprehensive claims. Michigan records roughly 50,000 a year.
  • Lake-effect snow, ice dams, and spring water backup drive most homeowners claims; water backup is an endorsement, not standard coverage.
